Lemon tree caterpillars prefer to feed on tender foliage and can consume large sections of young leaves. Just a small number of these pests can completely defoliate a young citrus tree. One of our readers found a caterpillar on her lime tree. She wants to know what kind of butterfly it will mature into.


We believe this is a Papilio cresphontes larva. Papilio demoleus is a common and widespread swallowtail butterfly. The butterfly is also known as the lime butterfly, lemon butterfly, lime swallowtail, and chequered. These caterpillars are less than inches long, and are found in birch, oak, willow, and lime trees.
